The Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest is a neo-renaissance gem. For a mere 10 euros (which is a lot of money in Hungarian Forint), I had the chance to see "Hófehérke és a 7 törpe", i.e. Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, a ballet performance by a Hungarian troupe and boy were they good! I remember this was one of the best days during my vacation. I felt really beautiful in my little black dress, brown trench and red heels (which I had brought for another mere 10 euros in the Budapest flea mart)! I think it was the building that makes everyone so dreamy when they enter. The chandeliers shine so bright, and the frescoes on the ceiling seem so real, one would think they are floating down to speak to you. The building transports you to another world. You almost become a part of this golden age where the fairy tales come to life. The entire audience was well dressed and I respect this tradition. The Opera should be sacred as so much effort goes into preparing and performing. The least the audience can do is respect the dress code. I left the Opera House, very aware that fairy tales exist, the world is full of lovely surprises, I'm just not searching hard enough!
P.S. Check out the website for the Opera House to see reviews and upcoming shows.
